German genius filmmaker Werner Herzog is definitely one of our all time favorites. He tempers his immense talent and vision with equal parts crazy and manic, perfecting the Alamo Drafthouse formula long before we were slinging beers and burgers to Austin audiences. We're ape over Herzog, and everything he does, including our favorite film from last year, THE BAD LIEUTENANT.

So we're very excited to present Herzog's masterpiece, AGUIRRE: THE WRATH OF GOD. The first in a series of five volatile but creatively successful collaborations with madman/acting genius Klaus Kinski, AGUIRRE tells the story of Lope de Aguirre, a Spanish soldier leading a pack of conquistadors through South America in search of a legendary city of gold. As the journey becomes fraught with problems, Aguirre and his crew fall deeper and deeper into madness within the oppressive jungles of Peru.

This is the foundational film for insanity in cinema, aided greatly by Kinski’s brilliant performance and Herzog’s keen eye for the strange side of life. While it’s got some of the most beautiful filmmaking and acting in film history, it’s not all hoity-toity; Kinski’s soliloquy to a tribe of monkeys is a true showstopper.

This film is a madhouse thrill ride that you'll either never forget or you already adore. Do not miss this beautiful new 35mm print!
