The Action Pack's WEDDING SINGER QUOTE-ALONG!

The Action Pack presents THE WEDDING SINGER QUOTE-ALONG
Thursday, April 1 at 7pm :: Alamo Ritz
Get tickets HERE!

It's time to party like its 1985! Seriously this could be mistaken for a totally '80s sing-along with the amount of goods we get to wail out during this movie, Boy George, George Michael, David Bowie--and you even get to hear old Rosie bust out Rapper's Delight. Couple that with the fact that this is Adam Sandler's best comedy, and you got yourself a night to remember. Come on out and join The Action Pack for this hybrid sing/quote-along as we watch Robbie Hart sing our favorite wedding songs and try to romance Julia away from that dick Glenn Gulia. What kind of name would Julia Gulia be anyway?! Not only will we be busting out our usual bag of tricks with some prop handouts, but we'll also be serving up a specialty menu with Rosie's oversized meatballs and rum and cokes. Just look out, we might wanna watch your face as you enjoy them. (Greg MacLennan)

UNBRIDALED Bridal Boutique will sponser a photobooth to have your awesome 80's photos taken at the APRIL 1ST SHOW only (no foolin'). "Special Prizes" for Best Robbie Hart look-a-like and, Oh my GOD! A $500 UNBRIDALED GIFT CERTIFICATE to the BEST 80's Bride costume!

PRODIGAL SONS at the Ritz

PRODIGAL SONS - Tuesday 3/30 and Wedneday 3/31 at the Ritz
Advance tickets available here

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, we’ll be showing PRODIGAL SONS, a new documentary that is so fantastic that you’ll barely believe it’s a true story. We’re very lucky to be able to screen this small, independent film. The reason the film jumped out to us, and why we fought to bring it out to Austin even when the distributors had no plans to show the film here, is because it has so much heart. The story is a soul-wrenching tale of a family struggling through problems that threaten to tear it apart, but is able to maintain a fascinating and non-sentimental tone. The director, who is also the subject of the film, is able to convey the small details of her family so beautifully that you will feel like a cousin, uncomfortably watching as your family unfurls at a Christmas dinner.

“Superb. No one could make this believable if it were fiction.”
- David Wiegand, San Francisco Chronicle

Two estranged brothers decide to end their separation at their twenty-year high school reunion. One brother has had a horrible car accident leaving him with severe brain damage, prone to troubling and violent mood swings. The other, who was captain of the football team, is now a woman and is bringing her girlfriend along for support. Their reunion turns from bittersweet to frightening, and always leaves you flabbergasted and enraptured. This fantastic story about mental illness, gender dilemmas, and family is so shocking and incredible that it is hard to believe…even before the shocking genetic link to Orson Welles comes into play! Director and subject Kimberly Reed is able to capture the mania, confusion and complications involved in her injured family.

Music Monday: DANCING OUTLAW w/ Director Live

MUSIC MONDAY: DANCING OUTLAW w/ Director Live!
Tonight at the Alamo Ritz
$2 tickets available here

Director Jacob Young is in town to present his cult-legendary documentary about cult-legend wildman Jesco White- this is like meeting a man who fell into a blackhole and lived to tell about it. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!

Join us for the classic documentary about Jesco White, greatest living Appalachian mountain dancer, hell-raiser, glue-sniffer and all-around hero for our times.

"In the dark recesses of the hills of Boone County, West Virginia lives a man named Jesse (Jesco) White. Around 1990, the eccentric "genius" of this Appalachian everyman became the subject of an irreverent documentary titled DANCING OUTLAW, and whether viewed as a comedy or a study in psychosis, the video has managed to catch the attention of quite a few people...This sociological milestone takes the viewer on an enlightening trip into the lives of people in a part of America that is shrouded in mystery, folklore and (not always unjustified) stereotypes. Go tell your friends... This is required viewing, especially after a few bottles of cough syrup". (Jake Harvey, FilmZone)

Korean Thriller MOTHER is a Must See

MOTHER
Now playing Alamo South Lamar
Advance tickets available here

"A superb murder mystery, with twists coming thick and fast yet always at the right moments. "
Maggie Lee, Hollywood Reporter

"The film is labyrinthine and deceptive, and not in a way we anticipate. It becomes a pleasure for the mind."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times

"Another must-see marvel of horror, comedy, and impeccable filmmaking by the Korean director Bong Joon-ho."
Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"It is the subtlety and dexterity of Bong Joon-ho that lifts his thriller to the ranks of Hitchcockian suspense."
Marjorie Baumgarten, The Austin Chronicle

From the director of THE HOST!

Hye-ja is a single mom to 27-year-old Do-joon. Her son is her raison d'être. Though an adult in years, Do-joon is naÏve and dependent on his mother, and a constant source of anxiety, often behaving in ways that are foolish or simply dangerous. Walking home alone one night down a nearly empty city street, he encounters a young girl who he follows for a while before she disappears into a dark alley. The next morning, she is found dead in an abandoned building and Do-joon is accused of her murder. Thanks to an inefficient lawyer and an apathetic police force, Do-joon's case is quickly closed, but his mother refuses to let this be the end of the story. Trusting no one, Hye-ja's maternal instincts kick into overdrive, and she sets out to find the girl's killer and prove her son's innocence.

Corey Haim Tribute: THE LOST BOYS

Corey Haim Tribute Show: THE LOST BOYS
Sun, Mar 21 & Mon, Mar 22 :: Alamo Ritz
Get your tickets HERE!

Beloved 80s teen idol Corey Haim tragically passed this past month, and to honor him we are playing his greatest film, THE LOST BOYS. Come and remember the greatest Corey in all of his glory, avoiding vampires and cracking wise.

David: How are those maggots?
Michael: Huh?
David: Maggots, Michael. You're eating maggots. How do they taste?

No horror movie captured the excitement, humor and plain weirdness of the '80s like THE LOST BOYS, and its bloodthirsty legacy is still undead and kicking over two decades later! Teen brothers Michael and Sam (Jason Patric and Corey Haim) move in with their grandpa in Santa Carla, 'The Murder Capital of the World.'

Turns out that a pack of leatherclad bad boy vampires led by Kiefer Sutherland is responsible for the body count, and Michael finds himself drawn into a terrifying, nightcrawling transformation. Luckily, local comic shop clerks/monster hunters The Frog Brothers (Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander) are up to the task of taking down the venomous threat once and for all! Packed with shocks, laughs, unbelievable '80s fashion and a soundtrack that includes the most ripping sax-rock jam in the history of earholes!

TASTE OF SXSW Screenings

TASTE OF SXSW SCREENINGS Various Dates at the Alamo Ritz

SXSW is an unrelenting beast of a week for film-goers in Austin. We make our schedules, we see as much as we can, but inevitably miss out on some great screenings. Or, we didn't get a badge this year for whatever reason, and we missed out on ALL the great screenings. Either way, we missed out on something great. To give you non-badge-holders a taste of what SXSW Film is all about or to give you run-ragged badge-holders a second chance, the Alamo programming team hand-selected four films for "Taste of SXSW." Note: These screenings are open to the general public.

REJOICE & SHOUT :: Sunday, March 21st
Packed with evocative photos, rare audio recordings, stirring film appearances and TV performances, REJOICE AND SHOUT covers the 200 year musical history of African-American Christianity. Culled from hundreds of hours of music REJOICE AND SHOUT features the creme de la creme of Gospel music.

MONSTERS :: Sunday, March 21st
Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after new life forms began to appear there and half of Mexico
was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures"...

OUTCAST :: Monday, March 22nd
Mary and her son Fergal live their lives on the run, hiding from someone or something. When they move to yet another new home, Fe
rgal finds himself caught between the affections of his beautiful and feisty neighbour and his fiercely protective mother who will stop at nothing to protect her precious son. Their hunter is Cathal, a dangerous and terrifying man, intent on tracking down and killing them using a dark form of magic to find them. Mary's only defense is to use the same ancient form of magic in order to protect her son. When local residents are brutally murdered by an unknown life force, the sense of fear escalates. Is Cathal the beast responsible for the killings? Or is it the beast that he is trying to destroy?

RED, WHITE & BLUE :: Tuesday, March 23rd
Erica (Amanda Fuller) spends her nights trawling the bars and beds of Austin. Emotionally withdrawn, sleeping with multiple men is just what she does... until she meets the older and mysterious Nate (Noah Taylor), who claims to have an "honorable discharge" from Iraq. Despite his air of danger, Nate's the only guy who doesn't just seem to want to get her into bed, and the two form a hesitant bond. But one of Erica's casual sexual encounters, Franki (Marc Senter) - a young, hot-headed wannabe rock star trying to make it big - is about to return dramatically into her life... Franki "shared" Erica with his buddies one drunken evening. A cruel twist of fate is all it takes to throw his already crazy world into a spin, and in Franki's eyes there is only one person to blame...

DATAPOP 3.0 :: Tuesday & Wednesday at The Highball

DATAPOP 3.0

TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY AT THE HIGHBALL
TOTALLY 100% FREE!

Last year, we got a hold of a documentary called REFORMAT THE PLANET and caught wind of the 8-Bit music craze. A year later, we still totally love it! Before The Highball was The Highball, it was an abandoned Salvation Army (and before that, a non-abandoned Salvation Army!). In that abandoned space, during SXSW 2009, we put up a stage, a couple of screens, and a bar, and we had our first DATAPOP show! Digital musicians from near and far plugged in their modified game boys and sound boards and other noisy gadgets to amps, and they made that abandoned Salvation Army into a PARTY! Three days later, that place still reeked of beer and cigarettes and sweat. Thanks Datapop!

We got to relive that magic (minus the beer and cigarette smell) again in November, in the no longer abandoned space (with a much nicer look!) for the Databeez Tour, but we’re doing it one more time WITH FULL FORCE! This SXSW season, we’re doing a two day long party! The Alamo, along with New York City’s 8bitpeoples, 2 Player productions, and the people behind the Blip Festival have joined forces to create DATAPOP 3.0! Now in it’s third installment, Datapop will transform the Highball into a unique cultural hot-spot featuring sets by 15 international 8-bit artists on a full concert stage with professional light and sound system.

Artists for this year include:
Anamanaguchi (Musician – New York, NY)
Bit Shifter (Musician – New York, NY)
8BK-ok (Musician – New York, NY)
Hally (Musician – Tokyo, JP)
Henry Homesweet (Musician – Ipswich/Lincoln, UK)
IAYD (Musician – Corpus Christi, TX)
Je Deviens DJ en 3 Jours (Musician – Nice, FR)
Jean Y. Kim (Visualist – New York, NY)
The Mysterious H (Musician – Austin, TX)
nordloef (Musician – Karishamn, SE)
Nullsleep (Musician – New York, NY)
Omeros (Visualist – Portland, OR)
Outpt (Visualist – New York, NY)
Paris (Visualist – New York, NY)
Random (Musician – Stockholm, SE)
Sabrepulse (Musician – London, UK)
Sievert (Musician – Houston, TX)
Starscream (Musician – New York, NY)
Talk to Animals (Musician – Baltimore, MD)
Trash80 (Musician – Los Angeles, CA)

Admission to this party is free, but be warned, it will get VERY ROWDY AND CROWDED so we recommend getting there early. Forget wristbands, this is going to be the party you really want to attend! A film and music in one. You can’t go wrong! DATAPOP 3.0 is going on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 16th & 17th at The Highball (1142 S. Lamar). Be there or be square.

Free Screening: REFORMAT THE PLANET

REFORMAT THE PLANET
Monday at South Lamar

Advance tickets available
here

Last year, we got a hold of a documentary called REFORMAT THE PLANET and caught wind of the 8-Bit music craze. Because of that documentary, and friends of ours who were part of this movement, we put together a showcase of great 8-Bit musicians in the abandoned Salvation Army space that was later converted into The Highball. We’re doing another screening of this fantastic documentary to prep our minds for another Datapop show. A show that is bigger, better and has twenty different artists performing for two nights! It’s going to be an epic party, and we would love for you to join us! We’re doing a FREE SCREENING of REFORMAT THE PLANET on Monday, and then the Alamo, along with New York City’s 8bitpeoples, 2 Player productions, and the people behind the Blip Festival have joined forces to create DATAPOP 3.0!

ABOUT REFORMAT THE PLANET:

“…one of the best music documentaries I have seen in years.”
Brian C. Gibson, Filmschoolrejects.com

“…if you’re a fan of the music or a videogame enthusiast in general, than this movie is a must see.”
Eric Moro, IGN.com

“…a perfectly entertaining and legitimate look at a new musical trend…”
Scott Weinberg, Cinematical.com

BLIP FESTIVAL: REFORMAT THE PLANET is a feature length documentary which delves into the movement known as chiptunes, a vibrant underground scene based around creating new, original music using old video game hardware. Familiar devices such as the Nintendo Game Boy and Nintendo Entertainment System are pushed in new directions with startling results.

Using New York as a microcosm for a larger global movement, “…Reformat the Planet” maps out the genesis of the first annual Blip Festival, a four day celebration of over 30 international artists exploring the untapped potential of low-bit video game consoles. With floor-stomping rhythms and fist-waving melodies, trailblazers of the chiptune idiom descend upon Manhattan to pen a new chapter in the history of electronic music.

PANCAKE. MASTER PANCAKE.

Master Pancake: GOLDFINGER
Friday and Saturday @ THE VILLAGE!
Advance tickets available here
This March, Master Pancake Theater devalues GOLDFINGER (1964), the movie that made "Shaken, not Stirred" and "Pussy Galore" household names. Featuring Sean Connery as James Bond, who must foil a scheme concocted by the absurdly named Auric Goldfinger to depreciate the monetary system of the United States, a plan that - prior to George Bush - most people thought impossible. At Goldfinger's side is a cavalcade of preposterous henchmen, including Harold Sakata as Oddjob, whose cutting edge headgear has 007 on the run, and Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore, the most ridiculously named Bond Girl since Mounds O'Snatch in SHAMROCKS ARE FOREVER. Join Master Pancake as we say "Bravo" to Bond and "Alas, poor Auric".

Action Packed Thursdays: Pee Wee Quote-Along & Jiggy Crunk Sing-Along!

PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE QUOTE-ALONG :: Thursday, March 11, 7pm, Ritz
TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE

JIGGY CRUNK: THE 90s POP RAP SING-ALONG :: Thursday, March 11, 9:45pm, Ritz :: Friday, March 5, Midnight, Village
TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE

There is probably no other reason on earth to put Pee Wee Herman and Vanilla Ice in the same picture together, but the awesomeness of Thursday at the Ritz demanded it! We're starting the evening off with possible THE funniest movie of all time, PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE! Watch the most entertaining man who has ever roamed the earth embark on a cross-country quest to reclaim his kidnapped best friend: a bicycle. Along the way, ol' P.W. will encounter tough-as-nails bikers, giant dinosaurs, wild animals, ninjas, chubby billionaires, escaped convicts, buckin' broncos, tone-deaf hobos, unwanted romance, fibbing gypsies, clumsy Godzillas, basement-less Alamos, vengeful boyfriends and even an undead trucker! Fun didn't exist until Pee-Wee invented it, and now the most funrocious, funtacular, fungorious funsplosion in the history of FUN will finally get its due as the most funeriffic Quote-Along ever!

Also, this just in! We're having the MR. BREAKFAST SPECIAL (A pancake, two eggs, 2 pieces of bacon and a strawberry - maybe in face form!) on the menu for the Pee Wee show so we can all say "GOOD MORNING, MR. BREAKFAST!" and really mean it! We'll also have cheap tequila shots available, so after we all dance in the biker bar, we can get drunk in the biker bar!

After that's over, we're hitting the JIGGY CRUNK SING-ALONG for the third (I think?) year in a row! The old school rap was great, and the realism of Common and Mos Def can't be appreciated enough, but god damn it, the pop rap of the 1990s was just so incredibly catchy. It feels bad to admit how much we love it, but it feels good to go with it. We'll be reprising a lot of our favorite songs from last year's show, so don't worry about missing out on your Will Smith, Neneh Cherry, or even Vanilla Ice. But go ahead and grow your facial hair out and then shave it to ridiculously thin lines, because there's a good chance Color Me Badd will make an experience. And grow your dreadlocks out, then give them to someone else and let them pretend to be you, because HELL YES we're going to include Milli Vanilli.

So come on out, and hell, make it a double feature. Your friends will think you're crazy, but then you can just reply with "I know you are but what am I?" and shove it in their faces!!!

Girlie Night: NOW AND THEN

Girlie Night presents
NOW AND THEN
Hosted by Sarah Pitre and with special prizes from Birds Barbershop
Tuesday, March 9, 7pm at the Alamo Ritz
Advance tickets available right here

When it comes to movies about girls growing up, NOW AND THEN pretty much kicks the sisterhood in their traveling pants.

When I first saw this film in 1995, I was instantly transported back to the best summer I never had. Riding bikes! Playing Red Rover! Holding seances in the graveyard! Communicating late at night via a complicated system of flashlights and walkie talkies! Stealing boys' underwear! This is the stuff that girlie adolescent dreams are made of (except for the whole taping boobs thing. Um, Roberta, you're LUCKY! Embrace your cleavage!).

Frankly, I could care less about the "grown-up" portions of the film (Christina Ricci turns into Rosie O'Donnell? Seriously?!) because the magic of NOW AND THEN isn't about being an adult or being a kid. It's about that awkward, amazing, in between time, when boys are gross but also kind of cute, when parents turn out to be human, when friendships feel like they will last forever.

Join me in March for a nostalgic evening with Roberta, Teeny, Sam and Chrissy as Girlie Night travels back to the groovetastic summer of 1970. We'll dodge Jell-o balloons, sing along to "Sugar, Sugar," learn life lessons from Crazy Pete and Hippie Brendan Fraser and swoon when Scott finally kisses Roberta - SIGH! (Sarah Pitre)

Your weekend all wet? Try SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN - Saturday 3/6 and Sunday 3/7 at the Ritz
Advance tickets available here

There are two types of people in the world:
1. Those who love the classic musical extravaganza SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
2. and those who haven't got around to seeing it yet.

Hollywood's last great masterpiece of entertainment, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is a heartwarming love story, a fabulous comedy, and a loving tribute to Hollywood history that is at once educational and hilarious.

And the songs. You cannot forget about the songs. Even the unlucky few who haven't been graced with the film know the iconic "Good Morning," "Broadway Melody," and "Make 'Em Laugh." Even more so, the title song "Singin' in the Rain" is engraved so deeply in our culture's musical heritage that I bet you're singin' it in your head as you read these words. I know I am.

The dancing sensation Gene Kelly co-directs (with musical legend Stanley Donen) and stars alongside the energetic comic genius Donald O'Connor and the beautiful and talented Debbie Reynolds in this beloved and epic, glorious motion picture.

This Saturday and Sunday March 6 and 7, we'll be having special brunch screenings of this movie in 35mm, the way the film was meant to be seen, on our biggest screen at the downtown Ritz theatre. In addition to the normal brunch menu, chef John Bullington has prepared some special delights available only at these shows!

Lockwood and Lamont 13.99
Seared T Bone topped with two fried eggs on a quarter Belgian waffle with fresh strawberries

Good Mornin' 9.99
Strata of sourdough, fresh spinach, sundried tomatoes, wild mushrooms, manchego and asiago soaked in herbed egg cream and baked and a side of strawberries

When we heard that Patton Oswalt was showing all his friends an inexpensive "romantic thriller" inspired by THE BIRDS and featuring Nintendo-level digital effects we were intrigued. When our friends saw it and called it the next THE ROOM, we knew we had to see it. When comedians Tim and Eric jumped on the bandwagon that bandwagon started looking even funnier - so we got on it too. And now we're looking at you. Have you ridden on a BANDWAGON recently? It's a pretty smooth ride.

Here's how writer/producer/director James Nguyen describes BIRDEMIC:

"A platoon of eagles & vultures attack the residence of a small town. Many people died. It's not known what caused the flying menace to attack. Two people managed to fight back, but will they survive BIRDEMIC?"

Perhaps the most discussed and anticipated avian-based disaster film since the THE BIRDS, BIRDEMIC is equal parts both epochal tale and cinematic warning shot. It tells the story of a couple unexpectedly and unforgettably caught in the eye of a feather-based storm…an apocalyptic attack winging down from the skies in a twisted morass of feathers, talons and blood-soaked claws.

No less than five years in the making, BIRDEMIC stands as a testament to James Nguyen’s dark, enduring vision.

Following the screening, we will have a Q&A with director Nguyen. In keeping with Birdemic’s immersive appeal, we will feature a display of props and costumes from the movie.
