MELLODRAMA

The mellotron is a magical musical instrument, capable of producing some of the most beautiful sounds the human ear can comprehend. It's mechanism is simple and brilliant: different instrument notes are recorded and the resultant tape is set up in the machine, so when the keyboard buttons are pushed the tape is played. This archaic form of "sampling" is in many ways the precursor to many modern music genres.

You may know the instrument as the dreamy, beautiful sound from the intro to the Beatles' Strawberry Fields Forever and as a favorite of The Moody Blues, The Zombies, Genesis, King Crimson, and Roxy Music, but you may not know that this box, originally marketed as the "orchestra at your fingertips," has a dynamic history and continues to be one of the most important innovations in popular music.

This doc captures that amazing sound and the quirky history of the instrument, tracing its rise and fall and rise in popular music interspersed with wonderful performances.

We're also very lucky to have a mellotron in the theatre for a live demonstration before the movie. This is going to be a Music Monday to remember.
