MYSTERY TEAM now playing!

Derrick Comedy's MYSTERY TEAM
Now playing at the Alamo Ritz
Advance tickets available here

"MYSTERY TEAM is incredibly well written... It's funnier and more original than 99% of the comedies Hollywood releases now-a-days. At very least, the film will develop a cult following. But I have a feeling that Derrick Comedy is on the edge of becoming huge."
- Peter Sciretta, Slashfilm.com

"I thought that the Derrick Comedy team's short film background would lead to a movie that was lacking cohesion and just a series of sketches, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Watching this movie I couldn't help but think that I was seeing the future of film comedy stretching its legs and warming up."
- Devin Faraci, CHUD.com

"...with MYSTERY TEAM, these boys hit one way out of the ballpark, producing not only the funniest comedy I've seen at (Sundance) so far, but one that definitely has the potential to stand toe-to-toe with the finer comedies of 2008 and the most hyped of 2009."
- Erik Davis, Cinematical.com

On the surface, this throwback to Encyclopedia Brown seems a little too innocent to merit an R rating, but then you watch about five more minutes. It's R alright, in the best way imaginable. And it's the innocence of the three lovable members of the Mystery Team that makes the film so goddamn'd good. Still living on the fumes of their 7th grade detective glory, these now-mature man-childs embark on their first real case, to track down a murderer.

Advance tickets available here

Once, every few decades or so, a film comes along that challenges our ideas of the cinema experience- CITIZEN KANE then GODFATHER and now THE FINAL DESTINATION...in 3D! We've been raving lunatics about the FD franchise, but this 4th (and final) installment looks to be the most raging, rampaging, wrath-fueled dollop of cool-whip on one delicious death pie. And we can't wait to take a bite.

If you want to be the first to experience this eye-hammer eviscerate your brain-guts in glorious 3D, then go to the Alamo Village tonight! We've even got some free Tee Shirts we're giving away as a reward to the truly blood-thirsty.

Yep, the Grim Reaper is back in action, this time to pull some outrageously complex life-snuffing antics in 4K DIGITAL PROJECTION!!! Just Make sure to turn off the oven before you leave the theater.

On what should have been a fun-filled day at the races, Nick O'Bannon has a horrific premonition in which a bizarre sequence of events causes multiple race cars to crash, sending flaming debris into the stands, brutally killing his friends and causing the upper deck of the stands to collapse on him. When he comes out of this grisly nightmare Nick panics, persuading his girlfriend, Lori, and their friends, Janet and Hunt, to leave...escaping seconds before Nick's frightening vision becomes a terrible reality. Thinking they've cheated death, the group has a new lease on life, but unfortunately for Nick and Lori, it is only the beginning. As his premonitions continue and the crash survivors begin to die one-by-one -- in increasingly gruesome ways -- Nick must figure out how to cheat death once and for all before he, too, reaches his final destination. The film marks the latest in the highly popular Final Destination series, and its first 3D installment, giving horror fans an especially visceral thrill ride.

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is "top shelf Tarantino."

Now playing at the Alamo Ritz and Village
Ritz Tickets Here
Village Tickets Here

As you may have heard - INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is a hell of a lot of fun. We're so used to turning off our brains and enjoying big loud summer movies that it's nice to leave our brains on for once. Hyper-stylish, incredibly violent and funny in the truest Tarantino sense, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS will have you walking down the street cheering afterwards.

"May be the most fun you'll have at the movies this summer. - Lou Lemenick, NY Post

"A fairy tale about the infinite power of film, it boasts all [Tarantino's] swaggering trademarks: rapid-fire dialogue, gleeful violence, endless cultural references. But it's the sharp-eyed deliberation that makes the greatest impact." - Elizabeth Weitzman - NY Daily News

"Energetic, inventive, swaggering fun, a consummate Hollywood entertainment -- rich in fantasy and blithely amoral." - J. Hoberman, Village Voice

"Once upon a time...in nazi-occupied France," Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.

Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's killing-squad joins forces with German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own.

This is movie maniac Tarantino's ten-years-in-the-making tribute to Italian director Enzo Castellari's INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, and looks to serve up all possible goods in the name of violent, macho warfare, with Brad Pitt in the swastika-hatin' lead. Yo, Hitler...SIT ON IT!!!

Tonight! Bobcat Goldthwait Live in Person!! Tickets still available!

WORLD'S GREATEST DAD w/ Bobcat Goldthwait Live!
Tonight at Alamo South Lamar!
Get your tickets here

"A truly strange comedy that actually has a message hidden beneath its colorfully tacky exterior. Admirably twisted, too."
Scott Weinberg, Cinematical

"Goldthwait wrings tender humanity from disturbing premises, but his scandalously entertaining new satire proves a darker, funnier success."
Aaron Hills, the Village Voice"

A story about a man that learns the things you want most may not be the things that make you happy, and that being lonely is not necessarily the same as being alone.

Robin Williams stars as Lance Clayton, a man who has learned to settle. He dreamed of being a rich and famous writer, but has only managed to make it as a high school poetry teacher. His only son Kyle (Daryl Sabara) is an insufferable jackass who won't give his father the time of day. He is dating Claire (Alexie Gilmore), the school's adorable art teacher, but she doesn't want to get serious -- or even acknowledge publicly that they are dating.

Then, in the wake of a freak accident, Lance suffers the worst tragedy and greatest opportunity of his life. He is suddenly faced with the possibility of all the fame, fortune and popularity he ever dreamed of, if he can only live with the knowledge of how he got there.

Spinal Tap's VIV SAVAGE Live in Person!

THIS IS SPINAL TAP Quote-Along
featuring keyboardist VIV SAVAGE live in person!
Thursday, Aug 20, 7pm at the Ritz
Advance tix available here!

We've had two weeks of SPINAL TAP Quote-Alongs already, and both of those shows were awesome. People rocked out with their inflatable guitars and did air solos along with Nigel's raging guitar/violin/whatever-else-is-nearby solos on screen. We turned it up to 11 with both our quoting and singing along with the action on screen, and we had more cushion for the pushin for sure.

But all of that pales into comparison to the pure amounts of good times we'll have all the time this Thursday night. This Thursday night, practically out of the ether itself, the most bad ass keyboard rocker, one with TWO HANDS, will be joining us live in person to sign photos, answer questions, and talk about his life on the road with the Loudest Band in the World. That's right Viv Savage, the Tap's original keyboard player, is flying all the way to Austin, TX for one super special final night of the THIS IS SPINAL TAP Quote-Along.

If you miss this, you may as well just sew the sleeves back onto your T-shirt and turn your amp down to zero. (Henri Mazza)

Worst week ever for Nazis starts with THE DIRTY DOZEN

BIG SCREEN CLASSICS: THE DIRTY DOZEN
Mon. Aug. 17 and Wed. Aug. 19, RITZ

Buy your tickets here.

Start getting your war on this week in preparation for INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS with the granddaddy of all "guys on a mission" movies. This is the big one. Twelve seventeen foot tall men of iron who don't like playing by the rules versus the Thousand Year Reich and its despicable toadies.

If THE DIRTY DOZEN were a lesser movie, it would merely be about Lee Marvin, Jim Brown, John Cassavetes, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland and Charles Bronson killing a bunch of Nazis, and that would be okay. But THE DIRTY DOZEN was directed by Robert Aldrich, not only Hollywood's supreme master of intelligent genre films, but a huge liberal who managed to make one of the most subversive films of its time. In 1967, in the middle of the Vietnam war, he shot one the biggest anti-war films ever made in Hollywood, fiercely critical of the military, authority figures of all kinds and the barbaric nature of war. All of this was done in the guise of a supposedly gung-ho action film that definitely gave audiences what they were looking for, but sure as hell didn't make them feel good about it. Not that THE DIRTY DOZEN is a downer - it's a hell of a lot of fun - but the director made sure it was understood that war itself is a criminal act that degrades us all. The fact that it was a huge hit (#1 film of 1967!) spoke well of the intelligence of audiences, but the fact that it's a big screen classic is proof positive that Aldrich was a one-of-a-kind cinematic master whose films will resonate forever.

There's something for everybody this weekend. Miyazaki's PONYO is at the Village in ultrabright Digital Projection courtesy of our next-wave Sony 4K projection system. Surely every serious Miyazaki fan will want to catch it in the optimal image quality and with a Ghibli-filled preshow. We've got you covered on both of those counts.

At Lamar we have DISTRICT 9. Unless you live in a decrepit abandoned spaceship, you've probably heard how UNBELIVABLY AMAZING it is. And it's a fact. As Harry Knowles pointed out, it "will heretofore be spoken of alongside such films as ALIENS, THE THING and 2001." See it with an "only at the Alamo" preshow of hotshot director Neill Blomkamp's short films and TV commercials. At DISTRICT 9, you'll really appreciate the extra care we put into our projection and sound systems. No busted sub-woofers like those mall theaters, just pure ecstasy.

Also at Lamar we have the movie A.O. Scott of the New York Times calls "by far the funniest political satire in recent memory," IN THE LOOP. Turns out that the last decade or so has made the U.S. and Britain a pretty massive target for satire and Armando Iannucci and company go in with guns blazing. If you're a fan of BBC America, you know Iannucci's work already. Even if you don't, all you need is a brain and a sense of humor to have the time of your life.

Midnight Madness tonight at S. Lamar!

DISTRICT 9 & IN THE LOOP
Midnight screenings tonight at Alamo South Lamar!
DISTRICT 9 tickets here
IN THE LOOP tickets here

Two of the films we've been most excited about this Summer open on the same day- tomorrow! But you can see them tonight!

"Ho. Ly. Shit...DISTRICT 9 is a landmark film that will heretofore be spoken of alongside such films as ALIENS, THE THING and 2001."
Massawyrm, Ain't It Cool News

"A genuinely original science fiction film that grabs you immediately, not letting go until the final shot."
Hollywood Reporter

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare, but very interested in their weapons.

"IN THE LOOP is incisive, chastening, and very nearly as good a political farce as Robert Altman's TANNER '88. One hates to say this, but IN THE LOOP is good in an almost American way."
Johnathan Romney, The Independent (UK)

"A Dr. Strangelove-level examination of all the foolishness, gossip and insecurities that actually make the world run."
Kaye Rich, CinemaBlend.com

A number of heavy dramas- including LIONS FOR LAMBS and IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH- have addressed the wars in the Middle East, but IN THE LOOP takes a different approach: comedy. Though the American president and the British prime minister are itching to attack, a top U.S. general (James Gandolfini) and the British Secretary of State for International Development (Tom Hollander) believe that's the wrong decision. However, a small miscommunication has the two powers ready to go to war, and it's up to the British pol to stop things before they get started.

NOLLYWOOD BABYLON at the Ritz

Fantastic Fest Presents: NOLLYWOOD BABYLON
Monday & Wednesday at the Alamo Ritz
Advance tickets available here

NOLLYWOOD BABYLON was about to be accepted to the 2009 edition of Fantastic Fest before the distributor decided to move up the film's theatrical release. It's a truly extraordinary film, and while it's not technically playing Fantastic Fest, it deserves the distinction.

Nigeria's film industry, Nollywood, is the third-largest in the world- an unstoppable economic and cultural force that has taken the continent by storm and is now bursting beyond the borders of Africa. This film is an intimate look into this exploding international popularity from the perspective of those within the industry. The film drops viewers into the chaos of Lagos' Idumota market. Here, among the bustling stalls, films are sold and unlikely stars are born. Unfazed by low budgets, enterprising filmmakers create a brash, inventive and wildly popular form of B-Movie that has Nigerians Nollywood-obsessed. In these films, voodoo and magic infuse urban stories, reflecting the collision of traditional mysticism and modern culture that Nigerians experience every day.

Propelled by a booming 1970s soundtrack of African underground music, this film presents an electric vision of a modern African metropolis and a revealing look at the powerhouse that is Nigerian cinema.

Get SAVED! at the Ritz

Hey Homo! presents the SAVED! Brunch
Saturday at the Alamo Ritz
Advance tickets available here

By popular demand, the Hey Homo! crew's coming out to save us all again. The last show sold out. Don't miss this one!

Have you been "Saved" yet? If you haven't, then you cannot miss this opportunity to open up your heart and let the good word in. Being raised Catholic, I grew up with the good book down my throat and a hard nun scrutinizing all I did. Now, I am older and wiser, and have realized that no book or any nun would know me better than I know myself. When watching this movie I could see a part of my life projected on the screen. An epiphany occurred that giving people a chance, despite feelings of hesitance, will many times surprise you. So, come on out and testify because aren't we all just a bunch of Homos any way?

In a Christian school, the fanatic Hilary Faye and Mary are best friends. However, their friendship explodes when Mary gets pregnant, after having sex with her gay boy-friend in attempt to "save" him. This inevitably questions the will of Jesus. Enough said.

BASTARDS with an 'A'!

The Original INGLORIOUS BASTARDS
Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday at the Alamo Ritz
Advance tickets available here

Megarare screening of a new 35mm print!

"Whatever THE DIRTY DOZEN did," screamed the ads, "they do it dirtier!" THE DIRTY DOZEN may have spawned several dozen imitators, but few were as much fun (or as outright looney) as this glorious action epic. One of the last of the numerous Italian WWII films, BASTARDS doesn't really care about being anything other than big entertainment, and Castellari and crew prove that they knew how to deliver as well as any big Hollywood production of the era. Also known as DEADLY MISSION and G.I. BRO, the film stars Bo Svenson and Fred Williamson as inmates on their way to the stockade when their convoy is hit by Nazi fire, setting them and the other prisoners free but also putting them behind enemy lines. They end up back in service to help execute a deadly secret mission to kill a lot of Nazis. A hell of a lot of Nazis. Of course, there's another movie with a similar title that's opening at the Alamo on August 22, but no doubt the people behind that one would encourage you to see this one first and this is a rare opportunity to see it in a BEAUTIFUL NEW 35mm PRINT courtesy of our friends at Severin Films.
