THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE WEIRD :: Opens 4/30 S. Lamar!

Fantastic Fest 2008 Favorite
THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE WEIRD
Opens Friday, April 30th at S. Lamar
Get tickets now HERE!

We of course think it’s every movie-lovers’ duty to check it out on the big screen, but if you don’t trust us as a reliable source, check out what some of the critics have been saying…

“A FULL THROTTLE THRILL RIDE.” V.A. Musetto, New York Post

“CRITICS PICK! Has an eye-popping energy all its own.” Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine

“****! Unadulterated guns-and-guts fun!” David Fear, Time Out New York

“RIDICULOUS FUN…A MUST SEE. Make the effort. You’ll be glad you did.” Anton Sirius, AINT IT COOL NEWS

“Like John Wayne and Quentin Tarantino’s love child, “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” is pulpy, schlocky fun—a violent neo-Western that’s less interested in verisimilitude than it is in making sure you have a wickedly bang-up time.” Alexis Loinaz, The Chicago Tribune

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE WEIRD, at face value, is a Korean remake of THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY. However, updated with eye-popping colors, fast-paced editing, explosive action and a slightly different twist on the story, it stands on its own two feet quite nicely.

Set in 1930’s Manchuria, the intricate plot pits three outlaws against the entire Japanese army and a mob of Russian gangsters in a race to find the “treasure” that will define the outcome of the Sino-Japanese war. (The story is complex; expect to read lots of complaints that it makes no sense, but trust me, it’s all there.) Jung Woo Sung is “The Good”. While not quite as iconic as the unforgettable Clint Eastwood, he is nonetheless handsome as hell and unflappably suave. He stands for the Korean resistance, determined to use every weapon at his disposal against the Japanese invaders. Lee Byung Hun is “The Bad”. More widely known from JSA, A BITTERSWEET LIFE and HERO, he’s as bad as villains come and also icy smooth. Employed by a treacherous warlord to waylay the treasure, he has no intention of sharing any of the profit with his employer.

The stand-out is Song Kang Ho, who won my heart irrevocably in THE HOST and is also well known from JSA, SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE, MEMORIES OF MURDER and LADY VENGEANCE. His turn as “The Weird”, for my money, outstrips Eli Wallach’s Tuco for sheer fun quotient and is a stellar three-dimensional performance that provides most of the buoyancy of the film that sustains the 2-hour plus run time. Apparently just a solo bandit out making a living, he stumbles across the prize and fights off all comers to hold on to it.

Last but not least, the desert filming location is a major star. This is a fantastic Wild West location, with an Asian flair. Magnificent scenery and set pieces are beautifully shot and squeezed for every ounce of spectacle. (Karrie League)

Starts Friday, April 30, at Alamo South Lamar. Get your tickets here.

Let off some steam, Bennett!

Action Pack Theatre presents
COMMANDO
with live explosions and cap guns for everyone!
Sundays April 25 and May 2 at the Alamo Ritz
Advance tickets available right here

If there's a mission that no man could survive...then John Matrix is the man for the job. The retired elite commando is enjoying his time off with his daughter in the mountains of northern KahLeeFornia when he catches wind that someone is killing off all of his former squad mates. When a supposedly dead, former elite, dishonorably discharged commando partner, Bennett, kidnaps Matrix's daughter in an attempt to blackmail him into one last job--to overthrow a democracy and reinstate a Marxist dictator--John Matrix's response is shooting Bennett's henchman and chasing him down.

Somewhere... somehow... someone's going to pay. What soon follows is a barrage of non stop gun fights, fisticuffs, and explosions.

And if you know The Action Pack, you know that's a perfect recipe for Action Pack Theatre, where we will be packing the flame torches and the pyro cannons readying to blow things up on cue!

Let it shine: SUNRISE with MY EDUCATION live!

SUNRISE w/ Live Score by MY EDUCATION
Sunday night at the Ritz
Advance tickets available here

SUNRISE, directed by German expressionist extraordinaire F.W. Murnau (NOSFERATU, FAUST), is one of the greatest silent films in the medium's rich history. It ranks with Dreyer's THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, Robert Weine's THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, Lang's METROPOLIS, Chaplin's CITY LIGHTS, and a small handful of other great masterpieces of visual cinema.

This stunning film tells the story of a philandering man who wants to murder his wife and make a run for it with his lover. But this fairy tale takes a turn for the fantastic when he has a change of heart and they embark on a second honeymoon of dazzling sights, visiting a great metropolis and partying at one of the wildest carnivals ever caught on film.

Murnau is remembered as one of our finest filmmakers because of his unique and imaginative visual style. The gorgeous visuals will be paired with the haunting and calamitous music of My Education. The band has been touring across the country with their original score for SUNRISE for the past two years, perfecting one of the most impressive silent film accompaniments of our time.

You are a fool if you miss this, which is sure to be the greatest silent film event of the weekend.

BEST WORST MOVIE
Opens Fri at S Lamar
Cast & Filmmakers LIVE on Fri & Sat night shows!

"A raging success… Infectiously fun, energetic, and crazily enthusiastic." - The Onion A.V. Club

There is NO better way to spend 90 minutes of your life than immersing yourself in this impossibly entertaining documentary.

The 1990 horror movie TROLL II is The Worst Film Ever Made. But somehow, the stories of its participants and creation weave the best documentary we've seen in years! Critically acclaimed beyond belief, BEST WORST MOVIE is a hilarious, very real and shockingly sincere exploration of the incredible and/or flawed components that somehow brought history's most ridiculous film to life. This riveting true-life story brings us the actors and filmmakers behind TROLL II, telling the story in their own words whether they've spent years in the cult movie limelight or hiding from their on-screen legacy.

An incredible experience whether you're a TROLL II fan or you've never even heard of the damn thing. It was THE film of SXSW '09, it's one of the best docs of our time and we can't wait to watch it again.

"One of the best documentaries of 2009… differing and fascinating levels of obscurity, normalcy, and dysfunction… gets us back in touch with what it means to love movies, to make them, and to have our lives changed by them for better, and sometimes Worst.” - /FILM

Before Steve Carell was the co-manager of the Scranton Branch of Dunder-Mifflin, he was a 40-year-old electronics store employee who'd never dipped his wick. His friends take it upon themselves to fix that situation, and as so often is the case in set ups like that - hijinks ensue. We'll have plenty of hijinks in the theater, too, and if you're brave enough to share the story of your first time we'll have special prizes available for our "most awkward loss of virginity" contest before the movie.

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE Tonight!

Music Monday: PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE
Tonight, Alamo Ritz, 35mm, $2!
Advance tickets available here

"Patch a modular synthesizer with SWITCHED ON employee The Phantom in the Alamo lobby before the show! "

Rare archival 35mm print!

It's not surprising in a way that PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE has continued to lurk like a black-clad avenger in the shadows and catacombs of "good" film canon. Though cinematically daring and virtuosic, it's pretty weird, and the themes of pervasive cultural death-worship may have cut a little deep at the time. So while it doesn't take its place on the high wall of honor with other '70s classics, some of us proudly display it in the trophy cases of our hearts. Brian De Palma plunders every era and style of cinema for his effects. It's a demented slapstick musical tragedy. The great Paul Williams (who also wrote the music) stars as Swan, a record producer and talent impresario. He's Mephistopheles by way of Phil Spector. De Palma favorite William Finley is tweaked perfection as Winslow Leach, a young composer who signs a contract with Swan - not in ink of course - and suffers the consequences. Lovely Jessica Harper (SUSPIRIA) is the romantic interest in this electronic-gothic masterpiece. The musical numbers set a new high water mark for tastelessness and excess. A confetti cannon loaded with disposable pop music, black magic, sex, love, loss and pain - don't miss it!

KICK-ASS with The Intergalactic Nemesis!

KICK-ASS with The Intergalactic Nemesis LIVE!
This weekend at the Alamo Ritz, 7pm shows only.
Get tickets here!

"KICK ASS does."

Peter Martin, Twitch

"KICK-ASS is a movie that will have you on your feet, cheering your fucking guts out."
Devin Faraci, CHUD

Here at Alamo Headquarters, we've been super stoked about this film finally hitting it's release. We saw it in December and were absolutely BLOWN AWAY! Matthew Vaughn and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (who totally surprised us with his attendance) were at the 6am Butt-Numb-A-Thon screening. They were expecting a room full of sleepy nerds, but what they didn't expect was that the sleepy nerds would totally rally and go bonkers for their film! I'm talking yelling, screaming, clapping with the beat of the music batshit crazy bonkers. It was probably one of the greatest cinematic experiences ever. Needless to say, they were pleased. And now, you will be too.

Matthew Vaughn (LAYER CAKE, STARDUST) brings forth an homage to the superhero movie that knocked out the crowd at Butt-Numb-a-Thon this year. Rising star Aaron Johnson plays the titular hero, a teenager who moonlights as a superhero. His unique brand of vigilantism is matched by Hit-Girl, played here by Chloe Moretz as a tough-as-nails heroine that is sure to be the number one Halloween costume this October. They team up and fight crime with a ruthlessness and bravado not expected from a pack of punk kids; the gunplay in this movie rivals the peak of John Woo's hardboiled Hong Kong films. Featuring Nicolas Cage as a weapon-obsessed father and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (yes, that Christopher Mintz-Plasse) as a super villian.

Before select screenings of KICK-ASS this weekend, enjoy a live, 15-minute performance of The Intergalactic Nemesis Live Action Graphic Novel.

The Intergalactic Nemesis: Episode Two, Enter Stranger

Back by popular demand! The epic story of Molly Sloan and Timmy Mendez continues in this 10-minute short. When Mysterion the Magnificent makes mind-slaves of an entire room of celebrities and diplomats (and Lord Crawford transforms into something abominable), Pulitzer-winner Molly Sloan and her assistant Timmy Mendez discover they are in waaaay over their heads. Episode Two picks up with the re-entrance of a mysterious stranger. Three actors/dozens of voices. One foley artist/hundreds of sounds. One keyboardist/thousands of notes. Plus hundreds of hand-drawn full-color comic-book images projected on the screen before your very eyes. The Intergalactic Nemesis Live-Action Graphic Novel is going to kick your ass before Kick-Ass!

See THE STUDENT NURSES and GROUP MARRIAGE with director Stephanie Rothman in person

Director Stephanie Rothman Presents

THE STUDENT NURSES (9:45 at the Ritz)
GROUP MARRIAGE (Midnight at the Ritz)
Click links to buy tickets.

In the '60s and '70s, many fine directors got their start with Roger Corman's microbudget operation: Coppola, Scorsese, Demme, Joe Dante, Ron Howard, Stephanie Rothman... Wait, what's her name doing in there? Well, that's the beginning of a long story and one that she tells best. Fortunately for us, she'll be here on Wednesday to tell it. For many of her male counterparts it was a hop, skip and a jump to bigger things, for Stephanie Rothman, the drive-in was the end of the line. So a promising career died on the vine. The company best known for Women In Prison and biker movies gave her a shot but big Hollywood wasn't interested in women directors so she moved on to other things. For years she didn't make appearences or grant interviews. But now she's back and her fascinating stories, and equally compelling films, are back too.

Wednesday night we'll have a double feature of her films, the provocative and subversive movie THE STUDENT NURSES at 9:40pm followed by the Weird Wednesday presentation of her relationship comedy GROUP MARRIAGE at midnight. She'll be in attendance to introduce both films. This is one of those very special presentations that you just can't miss.

TONIGHT: Girlie Night presents BIG

Girlie Night presents
BIG
Tues, 4/13, 7pm at the Ritz
Advance ti
ckets available here

Shimmy shimmy cocoa pop, shimmy shimmy roooock!!

Holy Zoltar, I love me some BIG. This movie fed my dreams as a kid more than any Barbie or Disney princess ever could. In fact, I'm still wondering when I'll reach the stage of adulthood that includes a massive New York penthouse with a trampoline and a job playing with toys all day because YES PLEASE.

Even though I'm officially an adult, I identify with Josh Baskin way more than any of the grown-ups in the movie because, seriously, who hasn't been tempted to blow their paycheck on pizza, Silly String and a sweet white tux? Not to mention the fact that I still don't really understand racquetball.

BIG is a reminder that getting old is no excuse to be boring, no matter what your married friends with kids might think (Psst! Bring them to the show! It's over by 10!).

Since Girlie Night is all about the squee, I couldn't be more excited to watch BIG with an audience who wants to hug Tom Hanks as much as I do. You better believe we'll be playing "Chopsticks" on a floor piano (I am not even kidding!) and eating baby corn in the most mature way possible. I read it. I said it. I stole my momma's credit! I'm cool. I'm hot. Sock me in the stomach three more times!

ZELLNEROIDS!

ZELLNEROIDS: The Zellner Bros Short Films Cavalcade
Mon, Apr 12, 7 PM at The Ritz

With David and T-Bone Zellner Live in Person!

This week, the Zellner Brothers are going to host a once-in-a-lifetime event. Screening the best of their short films from the past ten years, the very prolific male siblings will be fileting our brains with the "bizarro" "comedy" that they are so "well known" for.

From the heart-wrenching man/gibbon makeout scenes of FIDDLESTIXX to the adorable pups of FOXY AND THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD to the sharky peril of FLOTSAM/JETSAM...animals and humans alike will be wham-jammed to marvelization with the sheer visual thunder and aural lightning of these unstoppable creatorial juggernauts, who are often collectively referred to as "the Idi Amin of the Austin film universe."

And it's not just us who are crazy about the antics of these filmmakers. Kim Jones of the Austin Chronicle calls the Zellner's shorts "ridiculously funny" in an article/interview for the paper this past week!

BIRDEMIC strikes TONIGHT!

Tonight at the Ritz
Advance tickets available here

When we heard that Patton Oswalt was showing all his friends an inexpensive "romantic thriller" inspired by THE BIRDS and featuring Nintendo-level digital effects we were intrigued. When our friends saw it and called it the next THE ROOM, we knew we had to see it. When comedians Tim and Eric jumped on the bandwagon that bandwagon started looking even funnier - so we got on it too. And now we're looking at you. Have you ridden on a BANDWAGON recently? It's a pretty smooth ride.

Here's how writer/producer/director James Nguyen describes BIRDEMIC:

"A platoon of eagles & vultures attack the residence of a small town. Many people died. It's not known what caused the flying menace to attack. Two people managed to fight back, but will they survive BIRDEMIC?"

Perhaps the most discussed and anticipated avian-based disaster film since the THE BIRDS, BIRDEMIC is equal parts both epochal tale and cinematic warning shot. It tells the story of a couple unexpectedly and unforgettably caught in the eye of a feather-based storm- an apocalyptic attack winging down from the skies in a twisted morass of feathers, talons and blood-soaked claws.

The man caught holding the gun that fired the shot across the diegetic bow of cineastes everywhere? Look no further than writer-director-dream factory foreman James Nguyen. One of cinema's most persistent dreamers, Nguyen (legally trademarked as The Master of the Romantic Thriller) funded his masterwork with personal funds accrued from his day job as a Silicon Valley software salesman. No less than five years in the making, BIRDEMIC stands as a testament to Nguyen's dark, enduring vision.

FORBIDDEN ZONE with Susan Tyrrell Live!

FORBIDDEN ZONE with Susan Tyrrell Live!
Followed by SUSAN TYRRELL'S EYESORES Artshow at The Highball!
Sunday, April 11 at S. Lamar
Get tickets for film + artshow HERE!

NOTE: There are two different tickets available for this show! The $12 ticket gets you in to both the screening and The Highball after party ART SHOW! The $10 ticket just gets you into the movie! We recommend spending the 2 extra bucks!

An all-time classic of the underground cinema, featuring original music by Oscar-nominated composer Danny Elfman (PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, BATMAN), FORBIDDEN ZONE must be seen to be believed. And it's even more unbelievable to watch it with Susan Tyrrell, Queen Doris herself, there in the theater with you! Then join her and friends The Octopus Project for an after-party and art show at the Highball.

ABOUT THE FILM
There is a mysterious but forbidden door in the basement of the Hercules family's new house in Venice, California; it doesn't take long for daughter Frenchy, returning home from her bizarro school that features a machine gun-toting teacher and a chicken boy, to succumb to temptation and open it. Becoming trapped in the Sixth Dimension, which is ruled by randy midget King Fausto who, as luck would have it, is looking for a new concubine, Frenchy catches the king's eye. Unfortunately she also incurs the jealous Queen Doris's wrath, and is imprisoned along with the ex-queen, who plots Doris's demise. While Frenchy's brother Flash and her Gramps endeavor to save her, a dancing frog, robot boxers, Oingo-Boingo, and Danny Elfman as Satan all make their appearances in the FORBIDDEN ZONE.

Please note that the version we will be screening is the colorized version, per request of the director.

ABOUT THE AFTER PARTY
Join us after the movie as we transform the ballroom of the Highball into an art gallery showing some of Susan Tyrrell's recent NSFW paintings, complete with a live performance by her friends The Octopus Project. Dubbed Susan Tyrrell's Eye Sores, the experience will undoubtedly be a full night to remember.

Tickets are available for the double feature of film and after party, or for each event separately. Visit The Highball's website to pick up after party tickets only, or do the right thing and get your double feature ticket here!

The Action Pack's WEDDING SINGER QUOTE-ALONG!

WEDDING SINGER QUOTE-ALONG
Thursday, April 8 at 7:40pm :: Alamo Ritz
Get tickets HERE!

It's time to party like its 1985! Seriously this could be mistaken for a totally '80s sing-along with the amount of goods we get to wail out during this movie, Boy George, George Michael, David Bowie--and you even get to hear old Rosie bust out Rapper's Delight. Couple that with the fact that this is Adam Sandler's best comedy, and you got yourself a night to remember. Come on out and join The Action Pack for this hybrid sing/quote-along as we watch Robbie Hart sing our favorite wedding songs and try to romance Julia away from that dick Glenn Gulia. What kind of name would Julia Gulia be anyway?! Not only will we be busting out our usual bag of tricks with some prop handouts, but we'll also be serving up a specialty menu with Rosie's oversized meatballs and rum and cokes. Just look out, we might wanna watch your face as you enjoy them. (Greg MacLennan)

Help us LET THE REEL ONE IN for free!

Lars & Zack Present LET THE REEL ONE IN:
A Reel One Viewing Party - Free!
Admission is on a first come/first seated basis
Wednesday April 7, 9:50, Ritz

At a secret location in Austin, there's a huge film archive known as AGFA, the American Genre Film Archive - this non-profit archive counts among its board members and advisors Alamo Drafthouse founders Tim and Karrie League and programmers Lars Nilsen and Zack Carlson. Many of the film prints contained in the archive are not fully documented, so periodic inspections are conducted at which time we string up several "reel ones", that is to say the first 15-20 minutes of different movies, for the purpose of taking note of the credit information, condition of the film and general plot information. For folks interested in print collecting, obscure films and movie history, it's fascinating. Past "reel one" screenings have uncovered some real gems and some real boring doo-doo, so approach it with a sense of adventure and help us rediscover a few lost chapters in our movie history and find out more about AGFA and what you can do to help the cause.

Some of the reel ones we'll be checking out are: THE MIAMI CONNECTION, BREMENTOWN MUSICIANS and the deliciously named I WILL FINALLY KNOCK YOU DOWN, DAD.

Big Screen Classics get VICIOUS with THE ROAD WARRIOR!

THE ROAD WARRIOR
Archival 35mm print! Sun - Wed at The Ritz

The toughest movie of the 20th Century!

While it's sometimes depressing to realize that civilization is crumbling all around us and we'll all be scavenging for meat and fuel within weeks, it's also comforting to watch THE ROAD WARRIOR and realize how cool it's going to look. Seriously, Mel Gibson as Mad Max runs into a spot of trouble here and there but he kicks a thousand tons of ass. The movie is directed with so much skill and a serious movie buff's aptitude for the exact, perfect photographic angle or cutaway shot that it transcends the flat ugliness of the outback terrain and makes it a primal battleground for what's left of Good vs. rampaging, triumphant Evil. Lord Humungus and his triple-ugly crew of leatherpunk shit-starters are hall of fame bad guys and they enforce their own brand of social Darwinism with a gnarly mailed fist. It's up to Mad Max to be the de facto justice system in the midst of a war between the gasoline-crazed thugs and the perpetually oppressed good guys, who just want to raise their feral children and fly their super-incredible autogyros.

It's a film that has contributed whole volumes to the visual and aural language of filmmaking. Directed by George Miller at his Spielbergian peak. The photography, editing, stunt-work, art-direction and costume design are all divinely inspired, as if a force from beyond wanted to warn us about becoming too reliant on petroleum-based fuels. We're ready to listen.

Saturday, April 3 :: Tim & Karrie League's House
Purchase tickets HERE!
* All proceeds will be donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society!

This year I am riding the MS150 with a group of friends. All of us agreed that we hate cold-calling our friends for money. So instead of traditional fundraising, our team is raising money for MS by hosting an awesome evening with a movie, a four-course French feast and plenty of wine.

Please join us on Saturday, April 3rd at my house for an outdoor screening of the modern cycling classic THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE. Executive chef John Bullington will be preparing a four course French meal to complement the film and we will not be stingy with the wine.

Here's a look at what's in store:

I
Charcuterie - Fromage de Tete, Duck Prosciutto, Pate

II
Salade Lyonnaise

III
Escargot and Morels in puff pastry

IV
Seared Tenderloin Medallions with Bearnaise, Salt Roast Asparagus and Pommes Gratin

V
Mousse au Chocolat

For those who are interested in joining us, the team will also be meeting up earlier in the day for a 50 mile training ride. We will be meeting at Tim and Karrie's house (1305 W 22nd Street) at 11:00AM and will be riding the approximately 50 mile dam loop.

Seating arrangements will be provided, so you don't have to worry about bringing a chair to this particular Roadshow Event.

Tickets for this event are $90, and all proceeds will be donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society! Donating to charity has never been this tasty.
(Tim League, founder, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema)

Note: there is also an option to donate for those folks who will not be able to attend. 100% of your donation will be passed on to the MS Foundation.
